The channel is 15cm long, 6.3cm wide and 2.1cm high. Gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s^2 acts towards the bottom. On the left end spherical particles of 1mm diameter are generated with an inflow velocity of 1m/s resulting in 1.2*10^6 new particles per second. The obstacle is 2cm long and wide, extends to the full height of the channel and is placed directly in the middle of the channel at a distance of 3cm to the inflow. The setup was simulated for 10 seconds simulation time resulting in 10^6 time steps of constant length 10us. In each time step 10 iterations were performed using an underrelaxation factor of 0.75. The simulation ran for about 50 minutes on 32 nodes of the Emmy cluster at the Rechenzentrum Erlangen (RRZE). To properly resolve the dynamics visual scene descriptions were written to disk with a rate of 300 frames per second. The final video is slowed down by a factor of 10. The average maximum penetration out of 50 samples was 1.8% of the particle diameter. The error reduction parameter was set to 0.8.
