Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Today I welcome you to our instruction video on the
alkalinity using a Formosanave digital titrator set. So today we start with
one of the determination of the major anhydrous ions which is transcriptase, HCO3-, and to
To determine the concentration of the bicarbonate, you need to titrate your water sample in the field.
Typically, you use in the field a device from the manufacturer Hach from the United States that's called the digital titrator.
I will show you quickly how to assemble the unit and then how to measure your water sample.
To assemble the unit, we are working with sulfuric acid.
Since we are working with acid, I strongly recommend to use gloves and a safety goggle just in case some of the sulfuric acid makes it into your face.
We want to avoid under all circumstances that acid got in your eyes.
First, on the sulfuric acid cartridge, you have to check for the correct concentration.
There are two common concentrations that are delivered by the manufacturer.
There are more, but typically you use either 1.6 mol per liter equivalent concentration or you use 0.16 equivalent concentration of the sulfuric acid.
This is written in very small numbers here on the cartridge, so make sure that you really check that you have the correct concentration that you want.
In our case, we use the 1.6, which is the standard concentration that works for most.
for most river surface and groundwater.
First, this is the entire device nothing is digital it's fully analog
they call it digital tra点er because it has a digit display.
Keep in mind that it will not have a digital tra Dylan
first take your cartridge
Check the concentration
Put it into the cartridge holder and
Push carefully the plunger until it stops on the bottom of the cartridge
Remove the cap and
Take care that you do not lose it in the field. Yeah, imagine trees and
Things around me. Yeah, if you drop this on the ground, it's probably gone. Yeah, so make sure put it back into the box and
take one
Take out one of these deliveries
Put it inside here and then you might have some air bubbles here
on
On the upper part of the cartridge, so take a piece of tissue
And then
Use the lower of the wheels to push forward to plunger and to push out the acid out of the delivery tubing
Yeah, so we are just pushing that forward by turning it clockwise
to remove any air bubbles from our
Upper part of the cartridge and the tubing and you see that the acid comes out here on top as a small drop
We just remove it. So
Now we have removed the air bubbles and this is essentially the assembling of the cartridge. We put it away
And take our water sample
So
Imagine this is our water sample that we have just taken from the river which is
Essentially behind me. Yeah, so imagine this is a river or a groundwater or surface
Water sample whatever you want to analyze for the concentration of the b carbonate by determining the alkalinity
So first of all, you need 100 milliliter of sample water
Can pre flush it
With your sample and then
Fill in 100 ml
100 ml
Of your sample, yep almost perfect and
Transfer it into your
Citration flask
