Visualization of a rigid body simulation of a trampoline. The trampoline itself consists of 18x18 spheres located on 9 different processes. The individual coloring of the spheres indicates the affiliation to the different processes. All spheres of the trampoline are connected with their top, bottom, east and west neighbors, if available, by angular and linear pair wise spring-damper systems, indicated by the red cylinders. The total behavior of this compound object can be compared with the behavior of an elastic tissue. Additionally a larger sphere with initial downward velocity is positioned exactly in the middle of the trampoline domain. In the beginning, the larger sphere bounces into the trampoline and causes the deformations via the interconnected angular and linear pair-wise spring-damper systems. In the end, these systems restore the original shape of the trampoline. For the rigid body simulation, a discrete element solver is used, which has been extended in such a way that the spring-damper systems can also extend over process domains. The time integration scheme of this solver is based on a truncated Taylor expansion.
